A silver bar is defined as a cast or minted silver item, regardless of shape, which is made by a recognized silver bar manufacturer (like Johnson Matthey silver bars or Engelhard silver bars). Silver bullion bars are normally issued at a low premium above the prevailing value of their fine silver content.

The markings on silver bullion bars are mainly functional, recording the name of the manufacturer or issuer, the silver bar’s weight and silver purity, and a serial number of the bar.

The minimum or specified silver purity of bullion bars can range from 99% to 99.99%.

Although most silver bullion bars are rectangular, they are also manufactured in a variety of other shapes (square, round, oval etc).

Cast Silver Bars

Cast silver bullion bars are normally produced directly from silver that has been melted. The traditional method is to cast (i.e. pour) silver, which has been melted in a crucible, into a mould with appropriate dimensions. A modern method, now widely used to manufacture a smaller cast silver bar, is to melt, in a furnace, a measured weight of silver granules or cut pieces of silver that have been placed in a mould with appropriate dimensions.

Minted silver bullion bars are normally cut from a cast silver bar that has been rolled to a uniform thickness. Minted silver bars are also referred to as silver ingots, and in some countries as silver wafers.

Silver bullion bars are normally classified into two categories by weight: a large silver bar weighs more than 100 oz, a small silver bar weighs 1 oz or 10 oz.
